Terms & Acceptable Use

Last updated June 6, 2026.

By using TrashMap (trashmap.land) — browsing reports or submitting one — you agree to these terms. If you don't agree, please don't use the site. Please also read our Privacy Policy.

What TrashMap is

TrashMap is a free, community-run public registry for documenting illegal trash and dumping on BLM and other US public lands. It is not an emergency or law-enforcement service. We do not dispatch cleanup crews and we do not forward reports to authorities. For active crimes, hazardous spills, or any emergency, call 911 or BLM Law Enforcement directly — do not rely on TrashMap.

No government affiliation

TrashMap is an independent, community-run project. It is not affiliated with, endorsed by, or acting on behalf of the Bureau of Land Management, the National Park Service, the U.S. Forest Service, or any other government agency. Links to government or other third-party websites are provided for convenience only, and we are not responsible for their content.

Eligibility

You must be at least 13 years old to submit a report. By submitting, you confirm that you meet this requirement and that your use of the site complies with the laws that apply to you.

Your responsibility

No account is required, and reports are published immediately without prior review. You are solely responsible for what you submit and confirm that you have the right to submit it. Everything you post is public — see the Privacy Policy.

Acceptable use

When submitting content, you agree that you will not:

  • Post false, fabricated, or deliberately misleading reports.
  • Include other people's personal information — faces, license plates, names, addresses, or anything that identifies a private individual.
  • Upload content you don't have the rights to, including photos taken by someone else.
  • Post harassing, defamatory, hateful, sexual, or otherwise unlawful content.
  • Upload sexual content, any material that depicts or exploits a minor, or any other content that is illegal to possess, create, or distribute.
  • Photograph or document a crime scene, human remains, or evidence — call 911 instead.
  • Attempt to disrupt, overload, scrape abusively, or attack the service.

We may remove any content and restrict access at our discretion, especially where it violates these rules.

Content license

TrashMap is an open dataset. By submitting a report, you dedicate it to the public domain under Creative Commons CC0 1.0, allowing anyone to use, copy, and redistribute it — including researchers, journalists, and land managers. You represent that you own or have the necessary rights to the content and that this dedication does not violate anyone else's rights.

Takedown & reporting content

To request removal of a report — because it's yours, contains private information, or otherwise violates these terms — email eligorelick01@gmail.com with a link to or description of the specific report and the reason. We aim to review removal requests within a few business days and act on valid ones promptly. Copyright claims have their own process, described below.

Child safety

Content that sexually exploits or endangers a child is strictly prohibited and has no place on TrashMap. Where we become aware of apparent child sexual abuse material, we will remove it, preserve the relevant records as required by law, and report it to the National Center for Missing & Exploited Children (NCMEC) and/or law enforcement consistent with 18 U.S.C. § 2258A. If you encounter such content, report it immediately to eligorelick01@gmail.com; you can also report directly to NCMEC's CyberTipline at report.cybertip.org, and call 911 in an emergency.

Copyright policy (DMCA)

TrashMap complies with the Digital Millennium Copyright Act. If you believe content on TrashMap infringes a copyright you own or control, send a written notice to our designated agent at eligorelick01@gmail.com that includes: (1) your physical or electronic signature; (2) identification of the copyrighted work claimed to be infringed; (3) identification of the material claimed to be infringing and a link or information reasonably sufficient to locate it; (4) your name, address, telephone number, and email; (5) a statement that you have a good-faith belief that the use is not authorized by the copyright owner, its agent, or the law; and (6) a statement, under penalty of perjury, that the information in your notice is accurate and that you are the copyright owner or authorized to act on the owner's behalf.

Counter-notification. If your content was removed and you believe it was removed by mistake or misidentification, you may send a counter-notice to the same address that includes: your signature; identification of the removed material and the location where it appeared before removal; a statement, under penalty of perjury, that you have a good-faith belief the material was removed in error; your name, address, telephone number, and email; and a statement that you consent to the jurisdiction of the federal court for the judicial district in which you are located (or, if outside the United States, the District of Nevada) and that you will accept service of process from the party who filed the original notice.

Repeat infringers. In appropriate circumstances we will remove content and restrict or terminate access for users who are repeat infringers.

Designated agent. For purposes of the DMCA, notices of claimed infringement should be directed to the TrashMap designated agent, Eli Gorelick, by email at eligorelick01@gmail.com.

No warranty

TrashMap is provided "as is" and "as available," without warranties of any kind. We don't guarantee that reports are accurate, complete, current, or that locations are precise. The site may be unavailable or change at any time. Use the information at your own risk and verify anything important independently.

Limitation of liability

To the fullest extent permitted by law, TrashMap and its operators are not liable for any indirect, incidental, special, or consequential damages arising from your use of the site or reliance on its content. To the fullest extent permitted by law, our total aggregate liability for any claim arising out of or relating to the site or these terms will not exceed one hundred US dollars (US $100). Nothing here limits liability that cannot be limited under applicable law.

Indemnification

To the fullest extent permitted by law, you agree to indemnify and hold harmless TrashMap and its operators from any claims, liabilities, damages, losses, or expenses (including reasonable legal fees) arising out of the content you submit or your violation of these terms or of any law or third-party right.

Governing law

TrashMap is operated by Eli Gorelick from the State of Nevada, United States. These terms are governed by the laws of the State of Nevada and applicable US federal law, without regard to conflict-of-law principles. You agree that any dispute arising out of or relating to these terms or the site will be brought exclusively in the state or federal courts located in Nevada, and you consent to personal jurisdiction and venue there.

General

If any provision of these terms is held unenforceable, the remaining provisions stay in full effect. These terms, together with the Privacy Policy, are the entire agreement between you and TrashMap regarding the site and supersede any prior understandings. Our failure to enforce a provision is not a waiver of it. You may not assign these terms; we may assign them to a successor operator of TrashMap. The CC0 public-domain dedication above applies only to the report data you submit; the TrashMap software, website, and branding belong to the operator and are not covered by it.

Changes

We may update these terms as the project evolves. Continued use after changes means you accept the updated terms. We'll revise the "last updated" date above when we do.
